Social Inclusion of Migrant Musicians in Denmark, Belgium, Italy, and Romania
Discrimination against refugees and migrants remains widespread in Europe’s political climate, where tensions have peaked, leading to harsh rhetoric surrounding those seeking refuge in European countries. In this challenging context, art emerges as an untapped platform with the potential to promote social integration:
The EU-funded project MoSaIC – Music for Sound Integration in the Creative Sector was created to combat discrimination and facilitate the integration of migrants and refugees into Europe’s cultural and social life. Running from October 2018 to December 2021, the project was led by the Italian Ensemble AMADEUS and involved three partners from Belgium, Romania, and Denmark. Through music—a universal and borderless art form—new opportunities for collaboration, co-creation, and integration between musicians with migrant and European backgrounds were established.
Music as a Key to Belonging
MoSaIC focused on music’s unique ability to transcend language barriers and cultural differences while celebrating the musical traditions that migrants bring with them. The project worked to enhance the skills of professional musicians and create a community where artists from different backgrounds could exchange knowledge, explore genres, and produce music together. The goal was to engage migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the social and cultural life of their host countries and foster mutual understanding through shared musical experiences.
Unity Through Diversity
MoSaIC was based on the necessity of breaking down prejudices and reducing ignorance about migrants’ backgrounds. The project emphasized the importance of creating a shared European cultural heritage that recognizes and values diversity. By providing migrants with a platform to share their musical traditions and collaborate with European artists, MoSaIC aimed to promote mutual understanding and a renewed sense of belonging in Europe.
Through workshops, concerts, and transnational collaborations, MoSaIC forged lasting connections between participants and host countries. The project left behind a legacy of musical works that not only celebrated Europe’s cultural diversity but also paved the way for future integration through art.
