På hælene af 2020, var 2021 et år, der der stadig var præget af social afstand, afspritning og rejseforbud i et større europæisk perspektiv: Trods ét skridt frem og to skridt tilbage i forhokd til kulturverdenens muligheder for at udfolde sig, formåede vi stadig fra Swinging Europe-kontoret at komme i mål med en sammesætning af internationale, nationale, regionale og lokale projekter:
Vi afviklede succesfuldt aktiviter i vores Creative Europe-projekter MoSaIC og LIBERTY. Det europæiske samarbejdsprojekt MoSaIC så sin afslutning i form af World Music Festival i oktober – over tre dage, som bestod af mini-konference, stor live-koncert og workshops, rundede projektet af i en hyldest af blandede musikgenrer og mulitkultural identitet. I forhold til LIBERTY, afviklede vi LIBERTY Tour 2021, hvor 8 unge talentfulde musikere i ledtog med kunstnerisk leder Kenneth Dahl Knudsen turnede rundt i Danmark til uvante lokationer, for at bringe livemusikken ud til et bredt og vidtrækkende publikum.
Lokalt og regionalt slog Swinging Europe som institution tonen an i det herningensiske musikliv; det lokalbaserede projekt Connect skabte en platform for at unge elektroniske musikere kunne netværke og producerer nyt kunstnerisk materiale, mens vi i samarbejde med Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium – Odin Teatret bød ind med Ikarus Tagkoncert i løbet af HerningErMusik-ugen, hvor orange enhjørninge indtog Herning bymidte med levende musik og smittende energi. I det tværkunstneriske samarbejdsprojektet Idéerne indtog kunstnere Skulpturparken i august bidrog Swinging Europe med et ungt orkester, som gav levende toner til forestillingen sammen med de øvrige lokale kulturaktører; Det lokale herningensiske pilotprojekt Bevingede Ord undersøgte det mentale helbrede blandt udsatte traumatiserede flygtninge igennem musikken og litteraturens helende muligheder og En Symfoni til Herning spillede en storladet koncert i Sekskanten på Højhuset 1961 til stor applaus.
Jazzen Flytter Ind på Højskolen Skærgården fulgte i samme fodspor, da udsendte logerende jazzmusikere kiggede på livemusikkens positive effekter på Højskolen Skærgårdens elever, mens MOORJAZZ Festival 2021 tog en corona-venlig form med en række koncerter med kendte navne og up-and-coming musikere fordelt på diverse spillesteder over en uges tid. PLAY!GROUND LIVE 2021 blev afviklet, dog under nye omstændigheder: Højhuset 1961 blev arbejdsbasen for de udvalgte unge musikere, som holdt deres 3-dages bootcampforløb, samt de efterfølgende koncerter for omkringliggende skoler her. På denne måde kunne publikumsomfanget reguleres og forsvarlig afstand imellem musikerne kunne håndhæves fra Swinging Europes side.
Internationalt kunne vi afslutte vores Creative Europe-projekt MoSaIC med en stort anlagt afsluttende World Music Festival i Milano, samt formåede at afvikle touren for LIBERTY ORCHESTRA 2021, der spillede på uventede lokationer rundt om i landet. Ligeledes havde vi mulighed for at rejse ud i Europa igen, da LIBERTY inviterede indenfor til partnermøde i Nordfrankrig.

Following the challenges of 2020, 2021 was still a year marked by social distancing, alcohol consumption, and travel restrictions in a broader European context. Despite one step forward and two steps back regarding the cultural sector’s ability to flourish, we still managed from the Swinging Europe office to complete a portfolio of international, national, regional, and local projects:
We successfully executed activities in our Creative Europe projects, MoSaIC and LIBERTY. The European collaboration project MoSaIC concluded with a World Music Festival in October—spanning three days and featuring a mini-conference, a large live concert, and workshops—which celebrated a mix of musical genres and multicultural identity. In connection with LIBERTY, we held LIBERTY Tour 2021, during which 8 young, talented musicians, led by artistic director Kenneth Dahl Knudsen, toured around Denmark to unconventional locations in order to bring live music to a broad and diverse audience.
Locally and regionally, Swinging Europe set the tone in Herning’s music scene; the locally based project Connect created a platform for young electronic musicians to network and produce new artistic material, while, in collaboration with Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium – Odin Teatret, we contributed with the Ikarus Roof Concert during HerningErMusik Week, where orange unicorns took over Herning’s city center with live music and contagious energy. In the interdisciplinary project Ideas, artists occupied the Sculpture Park in August, with Swinging Europe contributing a young orchestra that provided live music for the performance alongside other local cultural actors; the local Herning pilot project Winged Words explored the mental healing of vulnerable, traumatized refugees through the restorative power of music and literature, and A Symphony for Herning delivered a grand concert at Sekskanten in Højhuset 1961 to great acclaim.
Jazzen Flytter Ind på Højskolen Skærgården followed a similar path, as broadcasted jazz musicians examined the positive effects of live music on the students at Højskolen Skærgården, while MOORJAZZ Festival 2021 took a corona-friendly form with a series of concerts featuring established names and up-and-coming musicians spread across various venues over the course of a week. PLAY!GROUND LIVE 2021 was also held, albeit under new circumstances: Højhuset 1961 served as the base of operations for the selected young musicians, who conducted a 3-day bootcamp followed by subsequent concerts for surrounding schools. This approach allowed us to regulate audience sizes and ensure that adequate distancing among musicians was maintained from Swinging Europe’s side.
Internationally, we concluded our Creative Europe project MoSaIC with a large-scale closing World Music Festival in Milan, and we successfully executed the tour for LIBERTY ORCHESTRA 2021, which performed at unexpected locations throughout the country. Furthermore, we were once again able to travel across Europe when LIBERTY hosted a partner meeting in northern France.
