2019 was a year defined by a combination of international, national, regional, and local initiatives related to our projects, which involved both launching as well as executing and facilitating activities. Internationally, the network project NIMPE came to a close, while the intercultural collaboration project MoSaIC continued to take shape. Locally, Swinging Europe as an institution set the tone in Herning’s music scene, when the first installment of the MOORJAZZ Festival was held on October 9 at HHHerning. Jazz was not left behind this time: the project Jazzen på Genvisit realized a musical cultural meeting between toddlers, professional jazz musicians, and students from VIA University College in Ikast and Horsens. Six Danish jazz musicians ventured into daycares, nurseries, and kindergartens to collaborate with the children in creating new and unique musical expressions through the reintroduction of jazz.
PLAY!GROUND LIVE offered a special edition: exclusively selected young musicians from previous years’ orchestras participated in a full-day celebration of the Italian city Matera’s role as European Capital of Culture at the beginning of the year. Together with several other bands from across Europe, the PLAY!GROUND LIVE musicians ushered in the cultural year at various locations, both outdoors and in specific venues.
Internationally, our intercultural collaboration project MoSaIC unfolded through initial workshops where our skilled nine female musicians from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Ireland, Iran, Kurdistan, and Syria had the opportunity to meet, rehearse together, and perform their first concert at the MOORJAZZ Festival.
Furthermore, the Nordic sound was explored as twelve young musicians from Denmark, Finland, Åland, and Greenland embarked on a Scandinavian tour as part of the talent development project Young Nordic Stars. Together with musician and artistic director Kenneth Dahl Knudsen, the social and skills development aspects were equally addressed, as the tour took them on road trips and even out on the waves.
In addition, our new intercultural Erasmus+ project, humARTS: Creatively Interpreting Human Rights, was carried out in the summer of 2019, and a new Creative Europe project, LIBERTY, kicked off with the first two partner meetings in England and Italy respectively.
