New Emerging Musicians for the Future Music Scene through Talent Development – the Sound of Tomorrow
Since 2001, the talent development project PLAY!GROUND LIVE has provided 12 young, talented musicians each year with the opportunity to make a name for themselves in the music world. As of 2024, this concept has nurtured a total of 216 professional musicians, helping them take their first steps and refine their talents on both instruments and microphones.
PLAY!GROUND LIVE consists of talented musicians aged 15-22, selected by bandleader Bo Stief through national try-outs held across Jutland, Funen, and Zealand. The selection process emphasizes musicality, social skills, and gender balance.
A Renowned Mentor in the Music Industry
Bassist, composer, bandleader, producer, mentor, and educator – a beloved figure with many roles. Bo Stief has been a prominent name on both the international and national music scene since the 1960s. As one of Denmark’s most celebrated bassists, he has helped put Danish bass playing on the global map, mastering both electric and acoustic bass with equal brilliance.
A Community-Driven Music Journey
At PLAY!GROUND LIVE, community is at the heart of everything: After an intensive rehearsal period in a supportive environment, the orchestra tours across Denmark, performing at festivals and concert venues throughout the year. Additionally, PLAY!GROUND LIVE takes music to unexpected and alternative spaces, such as asylum centers, schools, ferries, libraries, and art museums.
Through ensemble playing, creativity, and musical challenges, young musicians are guided through a transformative process, helping them develop their own artistic voice and vision. This experience equips them with valuable practical skills and prepares them for their future musical careers.
A Socially Driven Project
At its core, PLAY!GROUND LIVE is more than just a musical initiative – it is a social project that fosters both musical and personal growth. The project is built on the idea of creating a lasting community with multiple dimensions:
Community Among Band Members
Through an intensive rehearsal process, musicians become part of a strong, creative community, exploring music together, composing new pieces, and performing live. This collaborative journey enhances their social skills, teamwork, and ability to build meaningful relationships—qualities that extend far beyond the realm of music. By fostering a supportive environment, PLAY!GROUND LIVE empowers young artists to express themselves both creatively and socially.
Community With the Audience
The concerts hosted by PLAY!GROUND LIVE are not just performances—they are dynamic, high-energy experiences where musicians actively engage with the audience. This connection between the stage and the audience creates a unique musical bond, bridging gaps across generations, cultures, and experiences. Whether performed at a festival, a ferry, or a schoolyard, these concerts serve as a platform for cultural exchange and collective musical experiences.
